"She was a middle class girl.
She was in over her head.
She thought she could stand up in the deep end.
He had a bulletproof smile.
He had money to burn.
She thought she had the moon in her pocket.
But now she's dead. She's so dead. Forever dead, and lovely now." - Tom Waits
L'Inconnue de la Seine (The Unknown Woman of the Seine) was a young woman pulled from the River Seine in the late 1800's. Her body hung in the Paris mortuary for identification but was never claimed. Most like to believe she was a country girl who drowned herself over her Parisian lover. Her peaceful face (as opposed to most pulled out of the river) was adorned and made into a death mask that became so popular she's been the model for early 20th century girls' looks, the subject of literary and visual artworks, and is the face the Rescue Annie CPR doll was formed after.
