"I think that we've got to see that a riot is the language of the unheard. And, what is it that America has failed to hear?" - MLK Jr
This series "Language of the Unheard" is painted from photos and from memory of the night I found myself riding my bike around in smack the middle of the unrest in downtown Philadelphia on May 30, 2020, the fires and looting and mayhem following the George Floyd protests.
I knew there were protest marches. I knew something was on fire earlier. I headed out on my bike to see how Philly protests, rode a few blocks towards downtown where I figured it would be, and was puzzled when I rose by a Dunkin Donuts with the windows smashed out and people celebrating with fistfuls of donuts inside. Two pedals later I saw a cop standing outside having nothing to do with it. Not knowing was what going on ahead yet, and what was to come as the night went on, this was perplexing.
"Bedlam", "a scene of uproar and confusion" as Oxford Dictionary explains it, is the first of several incredible scenes in downtown Philly from that night, in the wake of the George Floyd protests.
